GLSW MS Challenge 2006

The MS Challenge took place near Capel Curig last Sunday (9th July 2006) in Forestry Commission land on the slopes of Moel Siabod. We had to complete a 10km course as a team of 12, carrying Alan Spiller, who suffers from MS, in a wheelchair.

The ground conditions were appalling – affected by heavy rain on Saturday afternoon/evening and which turned the rivers into torrents and prevented us doing two river crossings. The mud was unbelievable, and there was little respite throughout the course. We were completely shattered by the end (the Challenge took just under four hours).

Alan, who was the Manager of the Scout Shop in St George’s Walk, Croydon, and is now Manager of Milletts, was diagnosed with MS in 1994, but his condition has deteriorated in the last 2-3 years. He goes to the MS Therapy Centre in Coulsdon (Sutton & Croydon Centre) every Wednesday for various types of therapy and support. He has personally raised £1,200 in sponsorship. The team has raised a further £600 so far, so with gift aid we are within striking distance of £3,000. It would be great if GLSW members reading this on the website could make a donation. The Centre receives little or no public funding. It is an amazing place with such dedicated staff.

We used Bethesda as our base last weekend – you know we are very lucky to have such a fantastic asset in GLSW, but we all need to use it (or lose it!). The second group of pictues show the group at the base before the challenge and walking/scrambling in Cwm Lloer and on Pen yr Ole Wen on the north side of the Ogwen Valley.
