Cub Scout Report
Since the last County Annual General Meeting we have had many changes within our Section. Last year saw us mark yet another milestone in Cub Scouting when we were eighty-five years young. We had to mark this occasion appropriately, so it was decided that we would hold a Cubaree Fun Day towards the start of the summer at Frylands Wood Campsite.
All the plans were in full swing and I was impressed by the offers of help and the planning that everyone was putting into practice. Two days before the event I was aware that we would have 2200 people on site and they were arriving by coach, minibus, tram and on foot. Panic started to set in. We had yet another Team Meeting with the Warden and his staff and I was satisfied that we could still get everyone on and off the site safely and control the site safety as well. Surely nothing can go wrong? Saturday morning dawned and everything was in place and then the weather broke. RAIN and more RAIN. Never one to be deterred "the team" donned their coats and put the day in motion. Everyone had a great time; there were lots of activities ranging from Arts and Crafts, sports events, bouncy castles, all of the site activities and a mock battle with Roundheads and Cavaliers. I think the highlight for the Cubs was definitely the rain and mud. Standing on the gate as they all trooped home, my thoughts were not on how much my feet ached, but how much enjoyment you could see on each Childs face and to me that is what Cub Scouting is all about.
In November we held our Annual Swimming Gala which again last year was extremely well supported. The races were very close and from what I was told by the children present they all had a great time. It was the taking part that mattered, not the winning.
2002 saw the launch of PRI and what a launch. The way that we deliver Cub Scouting will change but the contents within our programmes are open to a much wider scope that meets today's needs of the child. There are more opportunities and challenges to be met as well as the bringing together of the family of Scouting within Groups. I look forward to this new challenge and welcome change and our move forward, after all the Future is Now.
This year we also have lots of events taking place within Districts for the Queen's Golden Jubilee and I look forward to visiting some of these as well.
Over the next year I am looking to introduce new events and activities for both Leaders and Cub Scouts and welcome any ideas that you may have. We already have two events and a couple more in the pipeline. Watch this space. I have personally found this first year in my new role both challenging and fun. I have enjoyed getting to know my team of Assistant District Commissioners and thank them for all the work that they put into running the Section within their Districts. I feel that I am very lucky in that they have been supportive of me and I am looking forward to our future in the Cub Section. I have also enjoyed the invites to various District Activities around the County and I have met many interesting people in my travels.
On a final note we have many innovative changes to integrate over the next year and I look forward to the challenge ahead, the Future is Now......
